Replacing motorcycle fairings: how to do it and where to buy them

Restyling your bike is something very common, which can happen for several reasons. The fairings, in fact, may have been damaged due to a fall, or the owner of the bike intends to change them either for aesthetic reasons or because, for example, he wants to go racing on the track. Of course, as with all other operations, even the replacement of the fairings is something not to be done in a superficial way to avoid unpleasant surprises. Below, therefore, some useful information on how to replace the fairings, where to buy them and how to customize them.

Types of hulls

If you need to renew your bike, then you should know that the two main types of fairings are Abs and Vtr. These differ in different aspects and mainly in materials. There are also carbon fairings for the bike, which is definitely the most expensive material but also the best. It is the most resistant and light, but if your intention is not to go and lap on the track and improve the times, the difference will not be so noticeable, on the contrary. As for the differences between the Abs fairings and the Vtr fairings, as mentioned above, it is appropriate to say that they are quite marked.

Abs is used by manufacturers, with which you can get a much better aesthetic result. Abs fairings are made by inserting the material into a mold, so then mounting the pieces is a much simpler operation and the parts that are purchased already have holes for the screws that are used for assembly. However, it is a more complicated material to repair than Vtr and also more expensive. Abs fairings are recommended for those riders who want to renew their bike or who need to replace a fender or a side or other component.

The Vtr fairings instead are made of fiberglass and are usually purchased raw, without any painting or even the holes for assembly. They cost little, so they are advantageous and every driver can drill and paint them at will in a very simple way, to have an excellent result. The fairings for the bike in this material are ideal for those who want to go racing on the track, they are repaired with little and are very light. The Vtr hulls are delicate, even if you can fix the damage with a simple sheet of fiberglass, they could present some signs of sagging over time, such as cracks around the screws. For this reason, these fairings for the motorcycle are often sold with Kevlar or carbon reinforcements. The price is often half that of the Abs fairings and is around 400 €.

Where to buy hulls

If you want to buy the fairings for your motorcycle, a possible choice to make is to buy them online where the best deals are located. Of course, it must be taken into account that the quality of the product is not exactly high. On platforms such as Ebay, DHgate, Aliexpress and others there is a kind of jungle for all sellers, who always produce in China in conditions and with very low quality hand molds. As a result, the product is offered at low prices in line with their level, which most often is mediocre, if not poor.

If you want the exact original piece, then you are in the right place. In the Fairings and Carbon section, we have a wide selection of original fairings for motorcycles, in particular original fairings and accessories Ducati. In the Carbon Fairings Section, in addition to the original kits, there are many high-quality carbon fiber components produced in Europe, tested and customized directly by our staff before being put on sale on our e-commerce.

How to customize the hulls

Depending on your needs, personal tastes and budget, the choices related to how to customize your fairings are many. Here are some ideas on the most popular methods you can use.

Airbrush: it is an instrument able to paint in a very realistic and accurate way particular drawings, with unique shades and bright colors. You can choose the subject and colors you prefer, to make your fairings unique.

Cubicatura: technique that the Anglo-Saxons define as "water transfer printing". It is an innovative method of professional painting, which allows you to transfer a design from a water-soluble film on any surface, even the fairings of the motorcycle. Thanks to the hydrostatic pressure, the film adheres perfectly and the graphics transfer without any error. It is a latest-generation painting technique, which allows you to enhance your bike; at the end of the 'transfer' process, everything is finished with a transparent, glossy or matte varnish, depending on the desired effect, which makes the result lasting and preserves it from scratches and damage.

Films: we can apply different types, depending on the needs and tastes. The effects range from classic carbon to brushed aluminum, but you can also choose the camouflage effect, the marble effect and any other, according to your imagination. Often carbon effect films are used by those who want to cover small damages and scratches. Obviously they are cheaper than painting and are able to give new life to the fairings of the bike, without damaging their originality.

Stickers: this is one of the best alternatives to give a special look to your two-wheeler. There are different types of stickers that can represent your personality, from those of matt color, to fluorescent or metallic. There are stickers with which to cover the entire vehicle body, or those that are used for the individual parts and therefore for example precisely the fairings or even the rims, the seat cover, the tank and so on. Usually, motorcycle stickers are made of a scratch-resistant and water-repellent material.

Polishing: intervention that is carried out with abrasive products and polishing creams, a job done manually and with suitable professional instruments. It serves to restore brilliance to the fairings and to the whole bike.

The fairings are therefore an extremely important part of the bike, to be treated with care at the level of replacement and customization.
