2025 Moto2 World Championship
The Moto2 World Championship currently underway has a strong Spanish accent, after a year off in which it was conquered by the charm of Japan. In the last edition, in fact, Ai Ogura triumphed at the wheel of a Boscoscuro, prevailing over the Spaniards Aron Canet and Manuel Gonzalez. Two drivers who, given the change in class of their rival, are ready to battle it out in the world championship that began in March and will end in mid-November.
Team and category changes
As already mentioned, after winning the Moto2 World Championship, Ogura decided to try his hand at MotoGP. It is Aprilia that is betting on the Asian rider, who shares the team among others with reigning world champion Jorge Martin. On the other hand, the two main pursuers of Ogura in 2024, namely the aforementioned Canet and Gonzalez, are still part of the Kalex family. A choice in the name of continuity, with the awareness of having room for improvement after a world championship closed on the two lowest steps of the podium. For the moment, the field – or, to put it a mile, the asphalt – is proving them right. Finally, as for the Italian riders, Celestino Vietti and Tony Arbolino (in 2024, the two best Italian riders in this motorsport class) move from Kalex to Boscoscuro.
Clear message from the start: Spain want to get back to winning ways
It is said that the first grands prix do not say everything about the development and above all the outcome of a World Championship, but they can certainly give interesting indications. This is the case of the 2025 Moto2 world championship review, which has seen Gonzalez and Canet as protagonists since the first race. On his debut in Thailand, in fact, the Madrid driver triumphs while his compatriot born in Corbera finishes behind him. Only crumbs, therefore, to the rivals of the other countries: third the Belgian Barry Baltus, fourth the Brazilian Diogo Moreira and fifth the British Jake Dixon.
The last rider mentioned, in the following races, makes it clear that he does not want to passively accept Spanish domination. In fact, he took first place in both Argentina and Chile: two grands prix where the Spaniards had fluctuating results (Gonzalez second and then twenty-second, Canet 2 times fourth). With Hispanics in a moment of decline, albeit brief, here are somewhat unexpected exploits such as Vietti's third place in Argentina and Arbolino's second in Chile. A flash in the pan, before the two aspiring Spanish champions start to get serious.
The turning point in Qatar: the Spanish duo is underway, but many do not give up
After the first 3 races, the World Championship still has balance to dominate. Surprises at the top at the end of the season may therefore still be possible, but Ogura's two rivals in 2024 will limit the hopes of others. As already mentioned, the slinding door of the tournament takes place in Qatar: Canet triumphs, Gonzalez finishes third and those who have performed well previously are not confirmed (Dixon, for example, does not even close the race).
The World Cup therefore becomes a mostly Spanish affair. With the Qatar success, Canet is a candidate to be Ogura's heir, but his rival is not of the same opinion. On the occasion of the home grand prix, in fact, it is Gonzalez who crosses the finish line first and then repeats it in France. The compatriot responds with an eighth and a third place, losing slightly ground but being far from throwing in the towel. The combination that smells of sangria and jamon serrano continued the following weeks, with 1 success for Gonzalez in Italy (plus 2 third places, respectively in Holland and the Czech Republic) and 2 races (in Italy and Holland) finished on the podium by Canet).
The other drivers, meanwhile, are certainly not watching. The last races staged in Moto 2, in fact, despite the situation at the top of the standings has not changed much, have also seen other protagonists show off. The Turkish Deniz Oncu, for example, after a complicated start to the World Championship, won in Aragon and Germany. Baltus filled up with second places, while Moreira finished 3 times on the podium winning in Holland. Finally, the victory obtained by the Australian Senna Agius in the United Kingdom should be remembered. The 2025 Moto2 World Championship, therefore, still has many interesting episodes to stage.
The situation in the standings
Among the 2 Spaniards, for the moment, Gonzalez leads the standings with 188 points. Canet follows closely behind him, at 163. Wild bunch behind them, with 4 riders within 34 points. Baltus closes the podium with 134 points, having Moreira, Dixon and Oncu behind him (who have 128, 119 and 100 points respectively). Anything can still happen, with 10 races still to go and other drivers (above all Agius and Vietti, with 93 and 90 points) who can get closer to the top of the standings.
