MotoGP World Championship 2025
The Spaniards dominate at the top of the MotoGP World Championship, as does the Bolognese accent and in particular the one spoken in the Borgo Panigale district. Just like in the 2024 edition, in the current edition it is the Ducati that is the master, giving the other engine manufacturers no chance. After Jorge Martin's victory last year, riding a red car, the feeling – not to say certainty – is that he passes the baton to another Iberian rider and Ducati rider who has a great desire to add more laurels to his already packed palmares. So let's take stock of what we saw in the 2025 world championship with regard to the highest class on two wheels.
Team changes before the World Championship
Between the 2024 and 2025 editions, the main novelty concerns the one who triumphed in the last World Championship, namely the aforementioned Jorge Martin. After his first success in MotoGP and second in his career (he had also triumphed in Moto3 in 2018), he decided to end his experience with Ducati and join Aprilia. No problem for the Bologna-based manufacturer, which still has riders of the calibre of Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez in the team. Added to these are the confirmed Franco Morbidelli, Fabio Di Giannantonio and Alex Marquez, while the Spaniard born in 2005 Fermin Aldeguer is promoted from Moto2 as a novelty. Marco Bezzecchi, in 2024 in Ducati, also emulates Martin and moves to Aprilia.
Dominant red from the first races
It therefore seems to be between Aprilia and Ducati the duel for dominance in MotoGP. Exactly, it seems. If you look back at the podiums of the first grands prix, in fact, it is difficult to find other colors other than the flaming red of the Ducati. In the races scheduled in Thailand, Argentina, Chile and Qatar, in fact, the first 3 positions are always occupied by riders from the Bologna-based manufacturer. Marc Marquez dominates, with 3 wins out of 4. Great moment for the family, as his brother Alex conquers 3 second places. Bagnaia is also in the top 4, occupying each position (remembering, in particular, the success in Chile). For the rest, on 2 occasions Morbidelli placed himself on the lowest step of the podium and on 1 it was Di Giannantonio's turn. To find a bike different from the Ducati in the top 3 we have to wait for the fifth grand prix, to be raced in Spain. For once, Marc Marquez was human and finished with a disappointing twelfth place. His brother Alex and Bagnaia always keep the Ducati at excellent levels, finishing first and third respectively. In second place, however, we find Fabio Qartararo's Yamaha. An isolated exploit, in a season literally dominated by Ducati.
Marquez senior's monologue starts from Aragon
The Spanish Grand Prix, however, with 2 out of 3 Ducatisti on the podium, gives confidence to the rivals of the Italian manufacturer. Johann Zarco stands out in particular astride his Honda, as he finishes first in France and second in Great Britain. The race in the United Kingdom sees Bezzecchi's Aprilia triumph: excellent results, which are offset by a few too many retirements at home Ducati such as those of Alex Marquez and Bagnaia in the 2 races mentioned above. Non-Ducati fans hoped for a turning point in the World Championship, but the following weeks would leave them disappointed, not to say astonished.
Starting from the Aragon Grand Prix, in fact, after a positive but at the same time fluctuating first phase of the World Championship, Marc Marquez plays the role of the cannibal and devours asphalt and opponents as if they were easy prey. He has a series of 5 consecutive victories: an event that has not happened since the 2019 MotoGP World Championship, the last one in which he triumphed. A streak that digs a ditch that is probably unbridgeable with his opponents (between Ducati teammates and drivers of other teams). A gap not only in terms of points but also, if not above all, on a psychological level.
The situation in the standings
With 10 races still to go, the standings see the throne firmly in the hands of Marquez senior. The rider born in Cervera has scored 381 points so far: 120 ahead of his first pursuer, his brother Alex. It is unlikely that the family hegemony this year can be overturned, but his World Championship has so far been decidedly satisfactory and clearly growing compared to last year (with only 1 podium and eighth place in the final).
The ranking continues with Ducati which continues to be the dominant brand. Bagnaia closes the podium with 213 points, followed by the first non-"red" rider, namely Bezzecchi (at 156). The Bolognese accent, however, resumed immediately afterwards, seeing Di Giannantonio and Morbidelli placed fifth and sixth. Several positions lower is Aldeguer, with 97 points and so far 1 podium conquered in France by finishing third. For him, this is a season of learning: the premises to do better in the coming months and even more so in 2026 are all there.
The constructors' standings, given what has been said above, appear all too intuitive. The Ducati has 430 points, with which it wipes out any hope of its competitors. Then there are Aprila with 187 points and KTM with 175: to dream of the World Championship we have to wait for the next edition.
